FIFA World Cup Soccer history began in 1928, when FIFA president Jules Rimet decided to stage an international soccer tournament. Two years later, the first competition in World Cup Soccer history only invited 13 teams. Later on, World Cup Soccer expanded to a two year qualifying process, including 200 teams around the world.
World Cup Soccer history shows that President Jules Rimet organized an inaugural World Cup Soccer tournament in Uruguay to take place in 1930, who was due to celebrate their centenary of independence, and because the country won two World Championships in 1924 and 1928. The location of Uruguay was so far from the European countries, which European teams did not commit until two months before the start of the World Cup. The World Cup Soccer history books reveal that eventually four teams from Europe, and seven teams from South America, and two teams from North America joined the World Cup 1930 Uruguay games.
The first two matches in World Cup Soccer history took place at the same time and were won by France and U.S.A, who beat Mexico, 4-1 and Belgium 3-0, respectively. Lucien Laurent of France scored the first goal in World Cup Soccer history, and the first person to complete a hat trick in World Cup Soccer history was Bert Patenaude of U.S.A in a 3-0 win against Paraguay. In the World Cup Soccer final, Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in front of a crowd of 93,000 people in Montevideo, making Uruguay the first country in World Cup Soccer history to win the World Cup.
World Cup 1934 was held in Italy, and included a qualification stage, a first in World Cup Soccer history. 16 teams qualified for the tournament that year, and the number stayed the same until an expansion of the finals tournaments in 1982. Egypt became the first African team to compete in a World Cup tournament in World Cup Soccer history. The 1938 World Cup was the first time in World Cup Soccer history that the title holders and the host country were given automatic qualification.
World War II and its’ aftermath resulted in the first cancellation of the tournament in World Cup Soccer history in 1942 and 1946. The 1950 World Cup in Brazil was the first in World Cup Soccer history to include British participants. British teams withdrew from FIFA in 1920 because of their unwillingness to play against countries that they were formerly at war with. The British rejoined the FIFA in 1946. World Cup 1954 in Switzerland was televised for the first time in World Cup Soccer history. In the 1958 World Cup-Sweden, Brazil was the first team in World Cup Soccer history to win the World Cup outside of its’ home continent. For the first time in World Cup Soccer history, marketing was used in promoting the World Cup games, with the host country England, coming up with a mascot and a logo in 1966.
