World Cup Soccer Teams

World Cup Soccer teams from all over the world battle each other every four years to compete in the FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament. The pool of World Cup Soccer teams start at 200, and then are whittled down to 32, through various qualifying tournaments held within the six FIFA continental zones (Africa, Asia, North and Central America, and Caribbean, South America, Oceania, and Europe).

Of those six FIFA continental zones, 78 World Cup Soccer teams qualified at least once for the World Cup finals. The downsizing trend continues, because only 11 out of the 78 World Cup Soccer teams made it to the World Cup final match. Seven World Cup Soccer teams won those final matches. The seven national World Cup Soccer teams that won the World Cup added stars to their crests (located on their team shirts), to signify a World Cup victory.

Brazil, World Cup Soccer’s most successful team, has five World Cup conquests. This World Cup Soccer team also is the only World Cup Soccer team that participated in every World Cup finals. Italy is the next World Cup Soccer team with huge success, winning four World Cup titles. World Cup Soccer teams Italy and Brazil are the only World Cup Soccer teams that won consecutive World Cup titles back to back (Italy: 1934 and 1938; Brazil: 1958 and 1962). World Cups 1970 and 1994 showcased the two most successful World Cup Soccer teams, Brazil and Italy, in the World Cup final, each having a chance to become the first World Cup Soccer team to win a third and fourth World Cup title, respectively. Brazil won both matches and a fifth title in 2002.

Brazil and Germany are the only two World Cup Soccer teams ever to appear in three consecutive World Cup final matches (1994, 1998, 2002 and 1982, 1986, 1990).  Brazil won two of three (1994 and 2002) and Germany won one (1990; all of Germany’s appearances were as West Germany). World Cup Soccer teams Brazil and Germany tied each other for most appearances in World Cup final matches with seven each.

Out of all 18 World Cup final matches, Brazil and Italy, and West Germany and Argentina are the only World Cup Soccer teams that played each other twice (Brazil and Italy in 1970 and 1994; West Germany and Argentina in 1986 and 1990). Every World Cup finals match up to date featured World Cup Soccer teams Brazil, Italy, Germany, and Argentina.
